Lewine's Tapes a Slam Dunk
By Wayne Thompson
Jazz Scene

There's no foolin' around with avant-garde stuff on this album, its highly traditional. It's Dixieland at its musical best. And it is packed with all the war-horse "Luuziana" tunes one would expect on a Dixieland album. And it is played with mischievous devotion by a group of musicians having fun. Check 'em out: "Muskrat Ramble," "Bourbon Street Parade," "Up a Lazy River," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Tailgate Ramble," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "When it's Sleepy Time Down South," "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans, ""Take me out to the Ball Game." "Caravan" and "Summertime" are thrown in for a contrasting measure. Nothing especially Dixielandish about those tunes. Lewine shows a lot of versatility in making this album. Brown, at times, sounds like a hip Roy Clark on the banjo.
