Like the origional cover art depicting modernized figures based on the Kokapelli musician/ fertility figure discoverd on thousand year old Anasazi rock art petroglyphs, this album is spirited and contemporary, yet firmly rooted in the jazz and bebop tradition.
A digital mix of an energetic "live in the studio" session, the Lewine/ Brown Xtet brings you jazz done right. The album, over an hour long, consists of 10 tunes, 5 written by bassist and producer Alan Lewine, one written by guitarist and co-leader Bob Brown, as well as standards and interesting remakes of non-jazz tunes like the beatle's Elanor Rigby.
In addition to these two fine players, the Lewine/Brown Xtet features the new mexico woodwind legend Arlen Asher on his usual plethora of alto and soprano saxophones, clarinet, flute, and bass flute. "El primero congero de jazz in Nuevo Mexico", Jose Pintor lends a unique Latin flavor to the recording. Of course, the album is anchored by Owlsong perennial drummer Cal Haines. Guest appearances by Laura Brown on vocals, Billy Morris on trumpet and trombonist Larry Case complete the line up and texture of the group.
Nominated as a finalist for the New Mexico MIC awards in the categories of Best Album Production, Best Remake Arrangement (Elanor Rigby) and Best Song/Experimental Music (Obfuscation through Syllabification ) the Lewine/Brown Xtet: freewheeling promises to satisfy.
