Grace Chung and WhoSheBe have created a stunning setting for her vocal talents. Close your eyes and listen as the intro to 'Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise' begins to unfold, as WhoSheBe lays down the vamp with a deep, moody delicacy. Grace's voice enters. And you're gone.
Grace Chung has a gift for illuminating the more subtle, unfamiliar areas of a song's heart. For, while her exquisite way with melody and phrasing are delivered with an adventurous spirit, it is always the unmistakable essence of a tune that guides her. Grace never loses sight of what makes a tune truly speak.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the first of two versions of 'I Thought About You.' Through the driving, fractured impressionism of this take, Grace barely touches on the words. Returning almost exclusively to the phrase 'I Thought About You', using it like punctuation, Grace conveys the entire soul of the tune. Any doubters only need to compare with the second version, which features the melody and lyrics intact. Both versions are complete, rich statements.
