As its title suggests, this album is Original Jazz. Recorded live at the KiMo theater in Albuquerque NM, Original Jazz gives an accurate representation of the Alan Lewine Septet's great talent and musicianship across a wide range of musical expression. Original Jazz is an action packed hour of jazz improvisation around tunes written by the group's Bassist and namesake , Alan Lewine. As the groups members groove away during their upbeat and interesting improvizations the live recording makes the listener feel as though he/she were in the same theater with the group. Spectacular!
And what members they are! Filling out the rhythm section with bassist and band leader Lewine, is Cal Haines, an owlsong favorite and longtime jazz veteran. The well versed piano of Kevin Zoernig provides additional rhythms as well as skilled melodic solos. With Glen Gross on the trumpet, Bill Wood on the Alto and Soprano sax, Phil Arnold on the Bass Trombone, and Peter Barbeau on Tenor, Bari and soprano sax, it is easy to see that the recording is thick with woodwinds and brass. All of the elements combined together is truly something to hear!
The combination of live exitement, thick orchestration that is reminicent of both a combo and a larger ensemble, and incredible musicianship, adds up to an experience you wont want to miss. Check out the Alan Lewine Septet: Original Jazz and see for yourself!
